Thomas Apartments Whist Game
I run a Duplicate Whist Game in Taunton MA. on Thursday nights twice a month. My game is on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 7:00pm. Duplicate Whist if you have never played it, is played just like regular Whist. The only differences are the cards are passed on trays called boards from table to table. Each board will take its turn in being trump starting with Hearts then Diamonds, Spades, Clubs, and No Trump. So basically it's the same game without cutting the deck and dealing out on every hand. You also play with the same partner for the whole night; you don't change partners like in the traditional Whist Party. You can come with a partner or come yourself. Duplicate Whist is a good game for small groups. We normally between 5 to 8 tables on most nights. There are no prizes; you will just get a score card, one score card for each pair. The cost is free, just a donation cover refreshments. I hope you can come we would love to have you. And bring some folks together who like to play and enjoy the game.

TONY BLAIR discusses A Journey: My Political Life in conversation with noted journalist TINA BROWN

Harvard Book Store is thrilled to host former British prime minister TONY BLAIR as he discusses his new political memoir,A Journey: My Political Life, in conversation with noted journalist and editor TINA BROWN.

Tony Blairs emergence as Labour Party leader in 1994 marked a seismic shift in British politics. Within a few short years, he had transformed his party and rallied the country behind him, becoming prime minister in 1997 with the biggest victory in Labours history, and bringing to an end eighteen years of Conservative government. He took Labour to a historic three terms in office as Britains dominant political figure of the last two decades.

A Journey
is Tony Blairs firsthand account of his years in office and beyond. Here he describes for the first time his role in shaping our recent history, from the aftermath of Princess Dianas death to the war on terror. He reveals the leadership decisions that were necessary to reinvent his party, the relationships with colleagues including Gordon Brown, the grueling negotiations for peace in Northern Ireland, the implementation of the biggest reforms to public services in Britain since 1945, and his relationships with leaders on the world stageNelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Vladimir Putin, George W. Bush. He analyzes the belief in ethical intervention that led to his decisions to go to war in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, and, most controversially of all, in Iraq.

Few British prime ministers have shaped the nations course as profoundly as Tony Blair, and his achievements and legacy will be debated for years to come.

Our first monthly meetup
Let's get together to chat about our photos over a cup of coffee It will be a great way to meet each other and learn some new techniques. We'll critique each other's work (but in a friendly manner). Each month will have a different theme. September's theme: Today marks the first day of fall (my favorite season). Our assignment for this meetup is to take 50+ pictures of what fall means to us. This could include a variety of subjects such as nature, children going back to school just to name a few. Bring your favorite 10-15 pictures to share with the group. (I will bring my laptop so if you want to save them on a flash drive you may). Look forward to seeing everyone's pictures.

Photo Scavenger Hunt
Join us for our first photo scavenger hunt. If you've never participated in a photo scavenger hunt before, let me explain how it works. Unlike most scavenger hunts where you bring back physical things that you've had to find, with a photo hunt, you just have to bring back a picture. Nowadays, most people will have a digital camera, even if it is just on their phone, so it makes the game easy for everyone to play (kid-friendly activity). I'll create the list of objects (suggestions welcomed). Some possible objects include: an acorn, a pink flower, a person reading a book etc. If we have a lot of participants, we'll split into teams. The first team, or individual, to photograph everything on the list, wins! The prize has yet to be determined.

JUSTICE STEPHEN BREYER discusses Making Our Democracy Work: A Judges View

Harvard Book Store is honored to welcome Supreme Court Justice STEPHEN BREYER as he discusses the role and future of the Court in American democracy, and his new bookMaking Democracy Work: A Judges View.

The Supreme Court is one of the most extraordinary institutions in our system of government. Charged with the responsibility of interpreting the Constitution, the nine unelected justices of the Court have the awesome power to strike down laws enacted by our elected representatives. Why does the public accept the Courts decisions as legitimate and follow them, even when those decisions are highly unpopular? What must the Court do to maintain the publics faith? How can the Court help make our democracy work?

Today we assume that when the Court rules, the public will obey. But Breyer declares that we cannot take the publics confidence in the Court for granted. He reminds us that at various moments in our history, the Courts decisions were disobeyed or ignored. And through investigations of past cases, concerning the Cherokee Indians, slavery, andBrown v. Board of Education,he brilliantly captures the stepsand the misstepsthe Court took on the road to establishing its legitimacy as the guardian of the Constitution.

Justice Breyer discusses what the Court must do going forward to maintain thatpublic confidence and argues for interpreting the Constitution in a way that works in practice. He forcefully rejects competing approaches that look exclusively to the Constitutions text or to the eighteenth-century views of the framers. Instead, he advocates a pragmatic approach that applies unchanging constitutional values to ever-changing circumstancesan approach that will best demonstrate to the public that the Constitution continues to serve us well. The Court, he believes, must also respect the roles that other actorssuch as the president, Congress, administrative agencies, and the statesplay in our democracy, and he emphasizes the Courts obligation to build cooperative relationships with them.

Finally, Justice Breyer examines the Courts recent decisions concerning the detainees held at Guantnamo Bay, contrasting these decisions with rulings concerning the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. He uses these cases to show how the Court can promote workable government by respecting the roles of other constitutional actors without compromising constitutional principles.

There's a lot of lighthouses in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. I thought it would be fun to break this meetup into 2 sections so that we can take our time exploring and not miss out on some amazing photo opportunities. For this first section, we'll be exploring lighthouses in the New Bedford area. Unfortunately, the lighthouses are no longer open, but the grounds are. We'll be visiting the following lighthouses: Ned's Point (in Mattapoisett), Butler's Flat, Clark's Point, and Palmer Island (all in NB). Waterfire Providence
Let's participate in the last Waterfire of the 2010 season. The Waterfire begins around 6:15pm. Let's plan to meet earlier to get the perfect spot. I just found out that the State House and some local buildings will be lit pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There will also be a parade earlier on in the day for those who want to attend. Check out Waterfire's website for more information. From their website: WaterFire Providence, the award-winning sculpture by Barnaby Evans installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence, has been praised by Rhode Island residents and international visitors alike as a powerful work of art and a moving symbol of Providence?s renaissance. WaterFire?s one hundred sparkling bonfires, the fragrant scent of aromatic wood smoke, the flickering firelight on the arched bridges, the silhouettes of the firetenders passing by the flames, the torch-lit vessels traveling down the river, and the enchanting music from around the world engage all the senses and emotions of those who stroll the paths of Waterplace Park. WaterFire has captured the imagination of over ten million visitors, bringing life to downtown, and revitalizing Rhode Island's capital city.

6PM Holiday or seasonal Promotions....What works for you?
Christmas is only two months away. Have you thought about how you are going to find new clients? Come and share! This is always a tricky way to promote because there are hundreds of holidays out there but only 4 seasons. Is it better to run a special or promotion 4 times a year where clients know that they better get the savings while it lasts or.... once or twice every month to generate a faster flow of clientele? Do you create gift baskets, gift bags to generate product retail sales? Bring along some examples of what you have done in the past that has worked for you. Very excited to see everyone again and also to meet new people who have a passion for holistic health and wellness as well as a willingness to share and receive ideas about growing your own practice. Lets get together learn and share. Please call me instead of emailing me for the address as this location is at my home. [masked] Be well, Kristen

Jamaica Pond Lantern Parade
Join us for Jamaica Pond's annual lantern parade. The ritual of the Jamaica Pond Lantern Parade began in 1984 when people gathered to make a journey with their candle-lit lanterns around Jamaica Pond. In preparation for the Lantern Parade, Spontaneous Celebrations and community members host lantern making workshops in which youth and adults of all ages create beautiful hand made lanterns from recycled soda bottles decorated with colorful tissue paper. The festival also involves local businesses who sell hand made lanterns in their shops. By the night of the festival, several thousand people have made lanterns (and anyone who hasn't can purchase one the night of the parade). Each year approximately 4,000 people arrive at Jamaica Pond at sunset with their lanterns; many children arriving in full Halloween costume as well. This beautiful autumn evening ceremony has become an annual tradition in our community. **This is a family, friendly event so please feel free to bring your children or grandchildren** I have never been to this parade before, but let's plan on meeting at the front entrance. I'll email my cell phone # to those who are coming. Also, you may want to bring a flashlight.

After we are done exploring Judith Point, I thought it might be fun to visit the town of Galilee which is close to the lighthouse or maybe go to Newport. I understand that Narragansett may be far away for some. If anyone is interested in carpooling from the Taunton area, please let me know.
